Visiting China’s Chief Icebreaker "Xuelong"

On September 29, 2024, 12 students from SHSID, led by Mr. Liao from the STEAM Office, visited the Chinese flagship polar research icebreaker "Xuelong" at the Polar Research Institute. This visit showcased China's outstanding achievements in polar research, and provided an opportunity for the students to experience China's scientific power.

As an important tool for polar scientific expeditions, "Xuelong" icebreaker is currently one of the most advanced polar icebreakers in China. It plays a pivotal role in Antarctic research, and symbolizes China's leading position in the field of polar science. During the visit, the students were able to get close to the advanced scientific equipment on board and learn how it conducts scientific missions in extreme environments. Facing such a magnificent icebreaker, the students felt the charm of cutting-edge technology. During the visit, they also gained a deeper understanding of the challenging scientific research journey behind the "Xuelong" icebreaker. The research stories told by the crew were inspiring, as scientists overcame difficulties and dangers to conduct crucial research in extreme environments. It highlighted the exceptional abilities of China's research team, and ignited the students' passion for scientific exploration.

The on-field science education is one of the platforms set up by SHSID. This visit not only opened the door to the scientific world for the students and helped them understand China's scientific research power and the hardships behind it, but also strengthen their determination to further explore science.
