Researching on "Helix": Harvard Medical School Professor Gave Lecture for SHSID Students

November 12, 2024

On the afternoon of November 11, Dr. Zi Chen, the Assistant Professor of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital , visited SHSID and held an attracting lecture titled "Dreams and Challenges: The Journey of an Underperforming Student to Princeton and Harvard" in Room 201 of Xianmian Building, attracting many teachers and students to listen.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Chen used "helix" as an introduction to tell the students about his own study experience. Though failing to get into a top high school, he managed to be admitted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and further studied for a doctorate at Princeton University, finally becoming an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Professor Chen has experienced countless hardships along the way. He frankly stated that it was the tenacity and unyielding spirit in the song "The Boundless Sea And Sky" that has always inspired him to keep moving forward. At the lecture, Professor Chen improvised this song to encourage students not to be afraid when facing difficulties and challenges, and bravely pursue their dreams.

Afterwards, Professor Chen introduced his own research field - various curling and "spiral" phenomena in nature. He elaborated on the principles of spiral extension of plant vines and the mechanical forces in early chicken brain morphogenesis, allowing the students to have a touch on the close connection between mechanical mechanics and biological phenomena and experience the unique charm of interdisciplinary studies. In addition, Professor Chen also displayed a new type of small robot using the properties of biomaterials and mechanical mechanics principles. Through a series of scientific experiment videos and scientific principle explanations, he looked forward to the future development of bio-tech autonomous robot systems, giving the students a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of the combination of theory and practical applications.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Chen shared his life motto in his study career and ended with a song "Vain Longing". The lecture not only showed Professor Chen's unique insights and charm in scientific research, but also further inspired the students' enthusiasm for scientific research.
