Grade 12 Assembly: Where Dreams Meet Technology

March 18, 2025

On March 14, during the 12th-grade morning assembly, WingsUp, our school’s first high school FTC (First Tech Challenge) robotics team, shared their experiences from the FTC Nationals in Guangzhou. The team reflected on their journey, from intense preparations to overcoming technical challenges and building lasting friendships with other teams.

Team engineer Steve began by introducing FTC as a robotics competition where teams design and build robots to complete annual challenges. He recounted the team’s four-month journey, from designing and prototyping to qualifying in Chenzhou and Shanghai, ultimately earning a spot at the Guangzhou Nationals. Despite challenges like late-night arrivals and circuit malfunctions, the team worked until 3 a.m. to resolve issues, demonstrating their resilience.

During the qualification matches, WingsUp faced strong teams from Beijing but were paired with weaker allies due to randomized alliances, finishing with a 3-3 record. Although they didn’t advance to the elimination rounds, their outreach and collaboration earned them the Connect Award. Team member Nicholas reflected, “The true value of our journey lies not in the trophies we earn, but in the paths we walk and the people we meet along the way.” WingsUp’s journey at the FTC Nationals showcased their passion and dedication to robotics, inspiring future generations of competitors.
