Grade 11 Assembly: The Campus History of SHSID

April 28, 2025

On April 24, 2025, SHSID juniors gathered in the Xianmian auditorium for another weekly assembly. Andy from class 11(3) delivered a compelling presentation on behalf of the SHSID History Club on the school’s campus history during World War II.

Andy explored the campus’s role as the Lunghwa Civilian Assembly Center (C.A.C.) from 1943 to 1945, where Allied civilians were interned following events like the 1937 Battle of Shanghai and the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. Drawing from works such as J.G. Ballard’s Empire of the Sun and Desmond Power’s Little Foreign Devil, Andy highlighted the perspective and resilience of those interned, connecting historical events to personal stories of survival.

The assembly deepened the community’s understanding of SHSID’s wartime legacy, illustrating how historical awareness can foster empathy and a shared commitment to preserving lessons of the past.
