Grade 10 Assembly:A Blind-Assistance Running Guide's Experience
On the September 24 sophomore assembly, Indy who participated in “Be Your Eyes”, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with visual impairments, delivered a speech on her gained experiences as a volunteer worker in the organization. She began by highlighting the startling fact that there are only around 40 guide dogs in Shanghai, despite nearly 90,000 visually impaired residents.
Indy shared her experience on her weekly volunteering role as a "大白陪跑员" (running guide), assisting blind individuals in activities such as running and rowing, she shared experience on the first day of attending to “be your eyes”, how one would be put in blind folds and experiencing blind running. Moreover, she described meeting a remarkable 7-year-old girl who, despite being completely blind, displayed incredible speed and courage while jogging. The speech gave SHSID students a glimpse of the challenges the visually impaired face every day, bringing attention to an overlooked aspect of society.
