April 28, 2024

The highly anticipated 2024 Shanghai High School Piano Competition came to a successful conclusion this past week. The competition, which began on March 18th and lasted for nearly six weeks, attracted over 300 piano enthusiasts from Grades One to Twelve across all campuses, including SHSID, SHSID Puxi Campus, Pudong Campus, Hongkou Campus and Lin’gang campus. After intense competition, the judges awarded first, second, and third-place prizes, as well as several excellent participation awards for the primary, middle and high school sections.

During the competition, the participants demonstrated their wide command of the classical musical repertoire as well as their diverse playing styles. The lively and charming performances of the primary school contestants left a deep impression on the audience, while the exquisite skills and profound musical talent displayed by the middle school contestants led the audience to applause.

The competition was a clear continuation of the characteristics of piano education particular to Shanghai High School, replete with an improvisational segment in the final round for the high school contestants. In this segment, contestants improvised based on static images, testing their musical literacy as well as their ability to innovate. This highlighted the school's philosophy towards piano education- one that focuses on cultivating students' creativity and emotional expression, amounting to a fun and engaging atmosphere onstage and a high-quality final concert.

The judges were amazed by the number of participants in the piano competition and praised the improvisational segment highly. They expressed their appreciation for the school's model of music education, an approach which focuses not only on cultivating students' skills at playing but that also taps into their creative potential. This is the essence of piano education at Shanghai High School and it is a distinguishing feature of our competition compared to other piano events that focus solely on skills.

A warm congratulations to all of the award-winning contestants. We look forward to seeing them continue to improve and advance throughout their musical journey!
