Grade 9 Bubble Blowing Competition

May 19, 2026

From May 14 to 18, the Grade 9 of Chemistry Department at SHSID successfully hosted the "Bubble Blowing Competition" and presentation showcase.

This project-based learning activity integrated principles of surface chemistry with a fun, hands-on childhood pastime, staging a captivating showdown of practical skills centered around surface tension. Throughout the event, students showcased their rigorous scientific processes and impressive experimental results, making them the absolute highlights of the competition. To engineer the ultimate, largest possible bubble, creating a synergistic blend of multi-functional additives became the premier strategy for the students' formulas. Ingredients such as glycerin, corn syrup, liquid glue, and sodium bicarbonate were meticulously combined to enhance the overall stability of the liquid system. For the hardware, students crafted custom bubble-blowing tools using two wooden handles, a cotton string, and metal washers. This clever design created a specialized loop capable of absorbing an immense amount of bubble solution through capillary action. During the live competition, giant, iridescent bubbles stretched majestically through the air. Floating gracefully while constantly morphing into different shapes, their surfaces shimmered with a dreamlike, prismatic glow of intertwined reds, greens, and blues.

This chemistry project allowed students to deeply comprehend relevant knowledge of surface chemistry through hands-on practice, while successfully planting the seeds of scientific inquiry in their hearts.
