High School Biology Department: Observe the Unique Me

March 29, 2024

Genetics is the focus of 10th-grade biology study in high school. In addition to having to grasp the complex concepts of genotype, phenotype, allele, etc., through studying the scientific history of the principles of genetics revealed by biologists such as Mendel and Morgan, students also get to further explore the importance of careful observation, adequate sampling, and scientific analysis in biological research. Despite all this, many students still had questions about the correlation between the dominance and frequency of alleles. In order to assuage their confusion with actual data, a unique high school biology classroom activity was hotly carried out in all classes on March 22, which took seven traits as the object of investigation and aimed to help students understand the mysteries of genetics more intuitively through their own observation and statistics.

During the investigation, students showed their brightest smiles to explore: the presence or absence of dimples, the extensions of their thumbs, their desk mates’ phenotypes, and their skills, such as fancy tongue rolls, all of which attracted a lot of amusement and laughter from the students. In the midst of laughter and discussion, the students completed the investigation and statistics of the seven traits. Based on the data of the whole grade, it was found that for most of the alleles involved in this activity, there was no obvious correlation between their frequencies and dominance. More importantly, by seeing it with their own eyes, the students realized that they are the result of a unique combination of thousands of phenotypes, emitting their own unique light in this diverse and wonderful world.
