Middle and Primary School English Department: Empathy Day and English Studies: Building Understanding Through Literature

On Wednesday, 10th June, students from SHSID Grades 4-8 participated in a range of lunchtime English enrichment activities as part of our Empathy Day celebrations.


Empathy is a skill that everyone should continue to develop throughout their lives, but for young people, it is particularly important to cultivate it early. Literature provides a powerful opportunity to experience lives, emotions, and perspectives beyond our own. Through reading, students can safely explore complex human experiences and practice empathy before applying it in the real world.















Throughout the event, students engaged in a variety of reading, writing, discussion, and creative activities, in which English served as a vehicle for empathy-building. Students explored texts from different perspectives, reflected on others' experiences, participated in collaborative discussions, and created their own written responses inspired by themes of kindness, understanding, and compassion.













The lunchtime activities highlighted the important role that literature can play in helping young people develop emotional intelligence, perspective-taking, and meaningful connections with others. It was wonderful to see students enthusiastically engaging with stories and ideas that encouraged them to look beyond themselves and consider the experiences of those around them.
