High School Physics: Waste Plastic Bottles Transformed into Water Rockets

From June 10 to 12, the water rocket competition for Grade 9 physics classes, after a month in preparation, unfolded splendidly on the lawn outside Zhongxing Building. Using discarded plastic beverage bottles to build rockets, students put mechanical knowledge learned in class into practice, demonstrating patience and ingenuity through trial flights and repeated adjustments.



Students formed teams freely within their physics classes. Instead of buying pre-assembled rocket kits online, they designed and built rocket frames entirely on their own. Many showed their creativity by painting patterns on rocket surfaces, making their works both practical and visually appealing.









During trial flights last week, each group fine-tuned their rockets multiple times based on performance. They focused on boosting the airtightness of air inlets, striking a balance between building up sufficient internal pressure for propulsion and enabling smooth liftoff. Their persistent tinkering fully showcased their patience and wisdom. In the end, every rocket reached a minimum height of two meters; most soared well above four meters, and several teams’ rockets shot high enough to clear Zhongxing Building entirely.





Graceful arcs streaked across the sky, bearing witness to the students’ hands-on skills and innovative spirits, and serving as a vivid tribute to textbook knowledge. Turning waste bottles into soaring rockets, the students proved firsthand that science is never out of reach and dreams can be forged with their own hands. Those arcs arching over the building stood as the teenagers’ bold salutes to the sky.
