Grade 12 "Soap Design Project": An Interdisciplinary Practice Merging Science and Business

June 12, 2026

This semester, Grade 12 students at SHSID launched the "Soap Design Project," an initiative that beautifully combines scientific rigor with business innovation. In the first phase of the project, students worked in groups of 3 to 4 in the laboratory, utilizing lard and olive oil to carry out the classic saponification reaction. Through precise weighing, heating, stirring, and salting-out for shaping, they transformed abstract chemical principles into uniquely crafted homemade soaps, deeply experiencing the charm of hands-on scientific exploration.

The project then transitioned into an exciting commercial presentation phase. Stepping into the shoes of a sales team from a daily necessities company, students pitched their products during a 7-minute roadshow. Utilizing carefully produced videos or PowerPoint presentations, they promoted their unique brand logos, exquisite packaging, and market positioning. This activity served as an interdisciplinary cultivation of the students' skills in scientific experimentation, artistic design, and marketing, fully showcasing their innovative thinking and capabilities.
