The 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026) Concludes in Shanghai

On the afternoon of July 20, the closing ceremony of the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026) was held at the Auditorium of Shanghai High School. Mr. Gregor Dolinar, President of the International Mathematical Olympiad Board, and Mr. Ruochuan Liu, Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the ceremony and delivered remarks. Mr. Yitang Zhang, a world-renowned mathematician, along with team leaders, observers, contestants, guests and volunteer representatives, also attended the event.


Since July 9, young mathematical talents from more than 120 countries and regions have gathered in Shanghai to compete, exchange ideas and build friendships. Beyond the competition, contestants explored the charm of Shanghai and experienced the richness of Chinese culture through a series of activities organized by the Organizing Committee. Meanwhile, the grading process was completed with professionalism and rigor, ensuring a fair and efficient competition.



Professor Ruochuan Liu encouraged contestants not to be defined by competition results, but to maintain their curiosity and perseverance in mathematical exploration. He encouraged them to cherish the friendships formed during the gathering and continue their mathematical journeys with confidence and determination.


 


At the award ceremony, the Honourable Mentions, Bronze Medals, Silver Medals, Gold Medals, Perfect Score Awards, the Mirzakhani Award and Extraordinary Achievements were announced. Award-winning contestants took the stage to receive their medals amid warm applause.

 

A total of 55 gold medals, 105 silver medals and 189 bronze medals were awarded at IMO 2026, while 141 contestants received Honourable Mentions. The Chinese team ranked first in the overall team standings, with all six contestants winning gold medals. Among them, Leyan Deng, Che Liu and Bolun Zhang achieved perfect scores. The United States team ranked second, while Russia and Singapore placed third and fourth respectively.



The closing ceremony also featured artistic performances, the screening of a promotional video for the 68th IMO, and the IMO flag handover ceremony. The 68th International Mathematical Olympiad will be hosted by Hungary in 2027.



In his closing remarks, Mr. Gregor Dolinar spoke highly of the success and achievements of IMO 2026, expressing appreciation to the contestants and all parties involved in organizing the event. He officially declared the successful conclusion of IMO 2026.
