SHSID Students Shine at the 2026 Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Innovation Camp
From July 16 to 21, the 2026 Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Innovation Camp and "Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow" Invitational Tournament was held in Shanghai's Xuhui District. Under the theme "Science, Innovation, Dream," the event was jointly organized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, and co-hosted by the Shanghai Educational Center of Science & Art and the Education Bureau of Xuhui District. Sixty delegations from eight countries and regions gathered in Shanghai to participate in a series of activities, including exhibitions of youth science and technology innovation achievements, an international invitational tournament, scientific exchanges, and hands-on creative challenges. Together, these activities promoted cross-cultural exchange in science and technology and showcased the innovative spirit of young people from around the world.
Two research projects by SHSID middle school students were selected by the organizers and invited to participate in the Camp and Invitational Tournament, following their outstanding performances at the 41st Shanghai Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest and the 24th Shanghai "Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow" Program. During the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Roadshow, the students presented their research to professional judges and members of the public through project demonstrations, on-site Q&A sessions, and exchanges. They also shared ideas and insights with other talented young innovators from around the world.

Under the guidance of Ms. Yao Shenghua, Irune and Xiaoxiao were shortlisted for the "Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow" Invitational Tournament with their project, "A Preliminary Study on the Green Control of Citrus Huanglongbing Using Antimicrobial Peptides." During the competition, the two students joined participants from different countries and regions to form a "friendship team." Working collaboratively on the assigned tasks, they completed a series of hands-on and creative design challenges, strengthening their skills in engineering practice and cross-cultural collaboration.

The other project, "Forecasting Shanghai's PM2.5 Index Using ARIMA and Exponential Smoothing Models," was completed by Palin under the guidance of Ms. Tang Peiyao. Focusing on urban air-quality forecasting, the project employed data analysis models to explore trends and patterns in PM2.5 levels, offering a valuable approach to environmental monitoring and prediction. It received recognition from the judges during the achievement exhibition.

During the event, Irune was also invited to represent outstanding young innovators from around the world at the Forum on Cultivating Global Youth Innovation Literacy in the Age of AI. In her presentation to guests and youth representatives from China, the United States, Singapore, and other countries and regions, she shared her team's journey in exploring environmentally friendly approaches to controlling citrus Huanglongbing, as well as their experience of using artificial intelligence to support scientific research. Her presentation highlighted the curiosity, courage, and innovative spirit of today's young people.

Following the achievement exhibition, roadshow presentations, and competition evaluation, both SHSID projects received prestigious awards: Irune and Xiaoxiao's project received the Outstanding Pioneer Award at the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Exhibition and the Creative Intelligence Pioneer Award at the 2026 Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Innovation Camp and "Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow" Invitational Tournament; Peilin's project received the Creative Presentation Award at the Youth Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Roadshow.

The international camp provided students with a valuable platform to present their research achievements and engage in international exchange, further enhancing their capacity for innovative practice and broadening their global perspectives. Looking ahead, SHSID will continue to advance science and technology innovation education, support students in exploring real-world problems, and cultivate a new generation of innovators equipped with scientific literacy, creativity, and global competence.
