SHSID Achieves Remarkable Results at the 2026 International Congress of Basic Science

On August 21, 2026, the 13-day 2026 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) concluded successfully in Beijing. Co-sponsored by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians, the Congress brought together leading scientists from around the world, academicians from China and abroad, Fields Medalists and Turing Award laureates, as well as outstanding teachers and students from universities and secondary schools. It is one of the highest-level academic gatherings in the field of basic science worldwide.



During the Congress, the ICBS High School Student Poster Exhibition, initiated by renowned mathematician Professor Shing-Tung Yau and co-hosted by the International Congress of Basic Science and the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA), was held concurrently. Focusing on mathematics, physics, computer science, and economic and financial modeling, the exhibition attracted more than 100 poster submissions from 43 secondary schools in China and abroad. After multiple rounds of expert review, 56 posters were selected, with 13 receiving the Excellent Poster Award.



In this high-level competition, SHSID Middle and Primary School had five student research projects selected, covering mathematics (2), physics (1), and computer science (2). One project received the Excellent Poster Award. The selected students and their supervising teacher, Shi Chengcheng, were invited to Beijing to present their research in person and engage in in-depth exchanges with leading scientists from China and abroad.



The Excellent Poster Award in Computer Science was awarded to HSIEH MING ZHE for the project "Semantic-Driven 3D Waypoint Generation and Hierarchical Path Optimization for Campus UAV Inspection." Addressing the limited coverage, low efficiency, and high manual-planning costs of conventional campus inspections, the project proposes an AI-driven autonomous inspection solution. Using the SHS campus as a real-world setting, it integrates multiple data sources, including satellite imagery, campus maps, and UAV field measurements, to construct a 3D semantic campus model. Through semantic understanding, automated waypoint generation, and hierarchical hybrid optimization algorithms, the project enables the automatic planning of 3D flight paths for different inspection objectives, ultimately generating efficient, continuous inspection routes with strong performance in both computational efficiency and path quality.



This exhibition not only provided SHSID students with a valuable platform to showcase their academic achievements and broaden their international horizons, but also demonstrated the school's sustained commitment to science and technology education and research-capability development. The school will continue to strengthen its high-quality basic science education system, encouraging students to explore boldly, innovate courageously, and make steady progress on their journeys of scientific discovery.
