Pudong Campus G1: Pudong Campus Welcomes First Graders with Warmth and Ceremony

As the cicadas’ song faded in late August, the Zhangjiang Campus was already filled with bright balloons, gentle greetings, and new classrooms opening their doors in quiet anticipation of the arrival of a fresh cohort of first-grade students.


On August 31, the Zhangjiang Campus of Shanghai High School International Division hosted its ceremonious Orientation Day for new students. Young faces, brimming with curiosity and smiles, stepped into their brand-new world of growth and learning.


First Encounters with New Teachers and Little Wishes Laid Down

Orientation Day began with warm welcomes from  the two homeroom teachers already waiting at the classroom door. As children walked up, hand-in-hand with their parents, they were greeted with bright smiles and gentle hugs. Their little faces, still shy as they said hello to their new teachers for the very first time, could barely conceal their eager anticipation.


Guided by their parents, the children quickly found their own labeled lockers and new desks, carefully placing their backpacks and school supplies in their proper places. Parents crouched down with smiles, gently attaching heart-shaped stickers bearing the words “I’m so proud of you! Have fun!” to their children’s clothes—tucking away their silent encouragement and hopes into the memory of this special day.


Later, the children picked up their pencils and carefully wrote down their little discoveries about their new classroom on colorful sticky notes: “I see a bookshelf in my classroom. I feel quite interesting.” One by one, they posted their notes onto the SHSID Moments bulletin board, preserving the freshness of their first day in this brand-new little world.













Saying Goodbye to Parents, Unlocking the First Campus Experience

As parents stepped away with reassuring smiles, the one-hour independent orientation began. Children watched a video introduction of their first-grade teachers and eagerly participated in a fun Q&A session, raising little hands to answer questions like “Which teacher loves cats?”—quickly warming up to the new environment.


Icebreaker games followed: “If you're wearing red, stand up!” and “If your name has the letter A, stand up!” Soon, giggles filled the room, as new friends discovered shared connections.


Teachers then guided the children through their class schedule, lunch procedures, rest-time rules, and how to organize their lockers—each step taken with care. The campus tour was a highlight: little lines snaked through the library, across the soft field, into the cafeteria, and past every restroom along the way, eyes wide with wonder.


At the end, each child wrote on a record card: “Today, the first thing I learned at SHSID was...”—capturing the very first moment of their new journey.


The hour-long activity felt both full and fleeting. Clutching their record cards and beaming with joy, the children bounced into the arms of their waiting parents.


Every smile, every raised hand, and every step of exploration marked the first gift that the Zhangjiang Campus offered to its new first-graders.









May these young learners, carrying the encouragement on their clothes and curiosity in their hearts, shine brightly on their unique paths of growth here at SHSID.
