Grade 9 Parent Meeting: Partnering for Student Growth

In the golden days of September, SHSID high school held a grand back-to-school parent meeting for Grade 9 students on the evening of September 3rd. The meeting was hosted by Grade 9 head teacher Ms. Xu Dan. Designed to help students transition smoothly into high school and to build a strong bridge for home-school collaboration, the event comprised a general session and subsequent classroom meetings. Centered on themes of academic transition, curriculum planning, scientific management, and holistic student development, the meeting provided parents with a comprehensive and instructive "first lesson" for high school.



Mr. Ma Feng, Vice Principal of Shanghai High School and Principal of SHSID High School, delivered the opening address. He presented the school’s educational philosophy, which ensures the all-round development of every student while offering diversified support for those aspiring to excellence. Highlighting the unique challenges of the middle-to-high school transition, Principal Ma reminded parents to pay close attention to this critical period and to guide the students by focusing on genuine interests rather than blindly following the crowd. Furthermore, he offered insights into the challenges of family education in the era of artificial intelligence, urging parents to stay truly informed about their children’s daily lives, make good use of the school’s communication platforms, and maintain an open dialogue with the school to jointly safeguard students’ growth.



Ms. Liu Min, Vice Principal of SHSID high school, provided guidance on academic and daily life during the transition. She outlined the overall curriculum design philosophy and elaborated on the comprehensive support system comprising homeroom teachers, subject teachers, college counselors, and specialized advisors. Ms. Liu also highlighted the school’s scientific management strategies in the areas of homework, sleep, mobile phone use, reading, and sports to help freshmen develop self-discipline. She sincerely called on parents to work closely with the school to support each student’s personalized growth.



Mr. Liao Hui from the STEAMS Advisors’ Office introduced the school’s mission of cultivating academic excellence and innovative talents. Through core programs such as project-based learning, global science challenges, and research mentoring, the school provides an interdisciplinary innovation platform for students. Regular campus events, including science exhibitions, technology symposiums, and scholar lectures, aim to spark scientific curiosity, enhance research capabilities, and lay a solid foundation for future academic and career development.



Mr. Lawman from the PE department spoke on the value of sports for student growth, illustrating the unique role of competitive sports in character building and university applications. He emphasized that sports not only improve physical fitness but also play an irreplaceable role in cultivating time management, teamwork, and resilience. Mr. Lawman encouraged parents to support their children in participating in diverse sports activities to develop a lifelong healthy lifestyle.



The second phase of the meeting was held in individual classrooms, hosted by homeroom teachers. Focusing on the transition, the homeroom teachers detailed the differences between high school and middle school in academic requirements, course selection, and college planning. They also explained various school support platforms, mental health services, and scholarship procedures, and answered parents’ questions on the spot. This face-to-face communication further strengthened home-school ties, laying a solid foundation for guiding students to adapt smoothly to high school life.



Education is a journey that the school and family walk side by side. The successful parent meeting has not only given parents a clearer understanding of high school academic requirements, support systems, and management strategies but also brought home and school closer together. We believe that with the school’s professional guidance and the family’s full cooperation, every Grade 9 student will embrace high school life with confidence, self-discipline, and self-reliance, and together write a new chapter of their youth.
