On the morning of September 1, 2026, faculty and students of SHSID Middle School gathered in the auditorium to welcome the new semester with high spirits.

The ceremony began with an opening address by Mr. Seevers, who concisely emphasised assembly etiquette, setting an orderly and harmonious tone for the entire event. Amid enthusiastic applause, Mr. Liu Lian, Principal of SHSID Middle and Primary School, took the stage to deliver his address, officially kicking off the new academic year. He shared three expectations with his students: Confidence, Independence, and Freedom to choose. Confidence means believing that one can continuously improve through method, practice, and reflection; Independence implies possessing a self-driven approach to learning, with the ability to proactively plan and conscientiously carry out tasks; and Freedom to choose is reflected in learning to make choices that benefit one’s own growth when faced with a wider range of courses and activities. Sixth grade emphasizes exploring interests, seventh grade focuses on academic improvement, and eighth grade hones comprehensive skills through service-learning. He encouraged the students to keep these three “selfs” in mind as they continually challenge themselves and grow throughout the new school year.

Ms. Chen Lu, Grade 6 supervisor, then took the stage to elaborate on “I Can,” the core concept for this grade level. Drawing on four dimensions—self-management, respect for others, correcting mistakes, and caring for the group—she outlined the core qualities sixth-grade students should strive to cultivate. She pointed out that growth is not about pursuing perfection, but participation, trying new things, and unwavering perseverance.

She then invited On Lee, a student from Class 6-2, to share a personal experience, bringing the concept to life. On Lee recounted how, upon first entering the school, she was filled with self-doubt—"Can I?"—as she faced the vast campus and a completely new environment. Could she find her classroom? Could she make friends? Could she adapt to the new pace of learning? However, through repeated attempts and persistence, these questions were gradually resolved, transforming into a confident and resolute “I can.” This authentic and vivid story of growth deeply moved the new students in attendance and instilled in them the confidence and courage to take their first steps toward adapting to middle school life.

Next, Ms. Cheng Liyan, Grade 7 supervisor, led everyone in reflecting on the past year, fully acknowledging the students’ excellent progress in self-confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility. She pointed out that seventh grade signifies a further increase in the demand for independence, and she expects students to develop the ability to plan their own learning content and schedule, make sound judgments even without supervision, and become reliable pillars of support for their peers. She encouraged all students to continue pushing their limits in the new school year, and to spend this critical period of growth in a fulfilling and meaningful way.

Janet from Class 7-9 then responded to this theme by sharing her own experience. She reflected on the dual challenges she faced in sixth grade—the increased academic difficulty and greater autonomy—noting that fluctuating grades and the pressure of multitasking had once left her overwhelmed. However, by creating a study schedule and prioritising her weaker subjects, she gradually regained her rhythm. At the same time, through organizing the ASB dodgeball event, she realized that leadership is more about teamwork and the ability to adapt on the spot. She advised everyone to manage their time efficiently and be bold in trying new things, because true growth often happens outside the classroom.

Ms. Wu Wenyi, Grade 8 supervisor, looked ahead to the new school year’s curriculum and activity plans, highlighting three key themes: “Explore, Persevere, and Serve.” She explained that new subjects would guide students in exploring the laws governing the world; service-learning projects would bridge the gap between school learning and societal needs; and the expanded range of club activities at would provide a broad platform for pursuing their interests. She encouraged the eighth-grade students to be curious, embrace challenges, and serve beyond self to create a profound and meaningful final chapter of their school journey. These words resonated deeply with the students in attendance.

Next, Sophia from Classes 8–10 shared her journey from feeling lost to discovering her passion.It wasn’t until she joined the volleyball team and was inspired by her teammates’ enthusiasm that she began dedicating significant time to training, overcoming her height disadvantage, and ultimately winning a medal and being named MVP. She believes that passion drives perseverance and helps one navigate various challenges in both academics and life, and she encouraged everyone to explore boldly and cherish the pursuits that drive their continuous growth.

Following the speeches by teachers and students, Ms. Shen Ying, Director of SHSID Puxi Campus Grade 6-8, provided a comprehensive review of the past academic year’s overall progress. She fully acknowledged the students’ breakthrough achievements in various fields, including academic competitions, technological innovation, and the arts and athletic. While acknowledging these achievements, she also set higher standards for all students regarding conduct—firstly, carefully navigate the boundaries of “jokes.” True humor, she emphasized, should bring joy to everyone present, rather than come at the expense of offending others. Secondly, students must strictly adhere to cell phone regulations: phones may not be brought onto campus without approval, and even when permitted, their use is limited to necessary communications only. She specifically cited the summer film *Niu Lai* as an example to encourage everyone: the three years of middle school are full of opportunities and challenges, temporary setbacks are merely part of the process, far from the end. As long as you keep moving forward, a turning point will eventually arrive quietly.

The grand awards ceremony brought the event to a climax. Principal Liu Lian first presented certificates to six section star classes that demonstrated exceptional performance last semester and the “All-around Achievement Award”, “Scholastic Achievement Award,” and “Active Participation and Service Award” were announced in turn by Director Ms. Shen Ying. The three grade-level supervisors—Ms. Chen Lu, Ms. Cheng Liyan, and Ms. Wu Wenyi—presented awards to students who received the “Sports Spirit Award,” while three group leaders of the foreign teachers—Mr. Klimmek, Mr. Laverrier, and Mr. Wendell—presented awards to the recipients of the “Artistic Excellent Award.” Award recipients took the stage one by one to receive certificates of honor from school leaders and teachers, their young faces beaming with smiles and confidence.

The ceremony ended with a spectacular animated presentation showcasing the “Outstanding Progress Award” and “Exemplary Attitude Award” recipients from grades G6–G8. At 11:00 a.m., the opening ceremony concluded; the canvas of the new school year now  unfurled. May every student draw strength from diligent practice, break new ground through a commitment to reality, and let today’s efforts illuminate the starlight of tomorrow.
