Grade 10: Excellent Sophomore Project Showcase

March 25, 2024

On Wednesday, March 20, after completing the first class of the afternoon, students gathered at the Lecture Hall in B1 to attend the biweekly CAS classes. The activity for this CAS was the G10 Excellent Sophomore Project Presentation. After last semester’s three-year plan, homeroom teacher consulting, artifact collection, and in-class presentations, 13 candidates emerged from the homerooms and stood on the stage to present their self-explorations during the last half year to the grade, all to answer the ultimate question that is both simple and difficult for high-schoolers: Who am I? The students were not only excited to see their classmates present onstage, but also were anticipatory toward presentations from other classes, eager to explore more possibilities of high-school life.

The first onstage was Letitia from 10(1). She first displayed her artifacts, one of which was a Biology notebook she spent a lot of time on. The precise diagrams and exquisite illustrations on each page clearly demonstrate her effort. Besides academic artifacts like Letitia’s, many presenters displayed the non-academic part of their lives to their fellow classmates: Esat from 10(2) put on his basketball shirt onstage, Necla from 10(5) took out her sketchbook which she draws daily doodles onto, and Daniel from 10(12) showed his camcorder, his receipt of which began his year-long interest in film and art… What’s more, Claire from 10(6) delivered her sophomore presentation in the medium of a video game where each level-up represented an advancement in her high-school life combined with artifacts from each stage, impressing the audience with her creativity.

Other than artifact display, presenters were also enthusiastic to use this opportunity as a platform to share their lives to peers. In presentation after presentation, tenth-graders were able to re-view the classmates they studied and grew up with in a new light. They now knew about Necla’s experience tutoring English in her neighborhood, Claire’s participation in two storytelling competitions and eventually winning first place, and Chelsea’s involvement in MUN and her growth from interaction with foreign competitors. Despite proud sharings of past achievements, many presenters also admitted their predicaments during their high-school life: Beeno faced a dilemma in balancing his academics and hobby of basketball; Alex divulged the difficulties stuttering brought to his school life and how he eventually got to accept it; and Daniel confessed about the procrastination he encountered during his making of the sophomore project. Each presenter showed his or her realest self to the audience, no doubt giving the most vivid answer to the complex question of “Who am I?”

The course of two classes passed away like a flash. As the last candidate finished his speech, tenth-graders all got up their phones to scan the QR code on the screen and rank their favorite presenters. There is no doubt that as the curtain finally falls for this 6-month activity, every student has found in themselves a direction meant for their own self and can live the rest of their high-school lives with this direction in mind.
