Grade 10 Parents Meeting: A Collaborative Dialogue on Growth and Education

On the evening of September 8, the Grade 10 Parents Meeting of Shanghai High School International Division commenced in the auditorium of Xianmian Building. Student volunteers, dressed in vests designed by their peers, were stationed around the venue to guide parents to their seats and provide one-on-one translation services for those in need. Their thoughtful arrangements set a warm and welcoming tone for the evening.


The meeting consisted of two parts. The first part was held in the auditorium and hosted by Ms. Chen Lin, head teacher of Grade 10. Four speakers then addressed the parents on topics including educational philosophy, curriculum design, college counseling, and arts education.



Mr. Ma Feng, Vice Principal of Shanghai High School and Principal of SHSID High School, opened the session by sharing the school's educational philosophy. He emphasized that the school is committed to fostering the holistic development of every student while also providing diversified support for those who aspire to excellence. Focusing on Grade 10 as a pivotal year, he offered guidance from several perspectives. In terms of direction, he advised parents to help their children identify their true interests and avoid following trends blindly, suggesting that depth of engagement often matters more than breadth. Regarding support, Principal Ma reaffirmed that the school uses scientific methods to assess student progress and provides a wealth of resources, including dual mentorship, STEAMS advising, and college counseling, backed by a strong record of academic and admissions success. On the topic of family education, he addressed both the opportunities and challenges brought by AI, urging parents to stay closely connected to their children's daily lives, make full use of the school's communication platforms, and maintain an open dialogue with the school to jointly navigate anxieties.



Next, Dr. Jiang Hao, the IB and AP Coordinator, offered a comprehensive overview of the high school curriculum, including school courses, AP, IBDP, and A-Level programs. She stressed that "there is no best program, only the best-fit program." She highlighted the academic achievements of the Class of 2026, made possible through the school’s multi-dimensional support, and introduced the "Steps to Learning" framework, which emphasizes a layered, progressive approach to learning. She encouraged students to explore broadly in Grade 10 and make course selections that suit each of them.



Ms. Cui Mengdi, Director of the College Counseling office, introduced the school's extensive college counseling resources, including the regular College Counseling Newsletter and personalized support at every stage of the application process. She outlined the distinctive features of higher education pathways in different countries and regions, and called on parents to work alongside the school in helping students set clear goals, find their direction, and begin preparing as early as Grade 10.



Mr. Noah Eppler, a school theatre teacher, then introduced the school's rich offerings in theatre, music, and visual arts. He highlighted the vibrant theater productions and artistic atmosphere on campus, which provide students with ample opportunities for creative expression. As a multidisciplinary art form, drama plays a unique role in developing students' communication skills, aesthetic sensibility, and self-confidence, while also enriching their humanistic outlook on life.



After the presentations, the meeting moved to the Zhongxing Building, where subject teachers in sixteen classrooms engaged with parents in face-to-face discussions and Q&A sessions. The conversations, focused on curriculum content and course selection, were lively and productive, with teachers offering detailed guidance tailored to each student's needs.

The meeting offered a comprehensive view of the school's multi-faceted support in curriculum, college counseling, and arts education, while also building a bridge for in-depth communication between school and families. As Principal Ma noted, Grade 10 is both a critical year and a year of great possibilities. With the joint efforts of the school and families, Grade 10 students are well-positioned to chart their own paths and grow with confidence.
