High School Chinese Department: Appreciate the Beauty of Chinese Characters in Every Stroke

To guide students in experiencing the unique charm of Chinese characters and to provide a platform for students with solid handwriting skills to showcase their abilities, the Chinese Department held a Chinese Character Writing Competition last semester. This semester, we presented awards to the winning students.


Taking into account the handwriting levels of students in different grades, the teachers carefully selected copybooks containing works by various famous calligraphers as reference models and distributed them to each class. In class, the teachers first gave detailed explanations of Chinese character structure, the starting and ending of strokes, and key writing points, and then assigned writing tasks, encouraging everyone to calm down and create carefully. Students could imitate the brushwork of famous calligraphers or incorporate their own thinking into their writing to create their own works.



The students were all very engaged, repeatedly polishing every stroke. The works they submitted were rich and varied in style: some were neat and steady, with upright and forceful handwriting; others incorporated personal characteristics on the basis of standard writing, revealing a touch of spirit between the lines. After all the works were collected, the teachers conducted a careful review, giving comprehensive scores from multiple perspectives such as neatness of handwriting, tidiness of the page, and the charm of brushwork, and selected the first, second, and third prizes. Many students believed that this writing competition helped them further appreciate the profound heritage of Chinese characters and reminded them of the preciousness of handwritten Chinese characters.


On September 11, the Chinese Department presented awards to students whose works won excellence awards, and the winning students took a group photo in Zhongxing Building. This writing competition not only showcased the students’ good writing style, but will also encourage more students to fall in love with writing and to write Chinese characters carefully and well.
