High School|2024 Pi-Day Events
To celebrate this year's Pi Day, the High School Math and P.E. departments collaborated to organize a week-long series of activities centered around the theme of "Sports and Mathematics," delivering an unforgettable experience for both students and teachers. Let's take a look back at this memorable week of Pi Day celebrations.
On March 11th, students enthusiastically shared interesting board games related to numbers in the corridors of the Zhentao Building and the lobby of the Xianmian Building. These games were not only creative but also contained rich mathematical principles. Through interactive demonstrations and explorations, students gained a deep understanding of mathematical elements such as probability and strategy within the games, fully experiencing the perfect integration of mathematics and gaming.
On March 12th, the booths at the event displayed and showcased excellent projects from different grades. During the winter vacation, students collected data through methods such as questionnaires, mathematical modeling, and field tests, and conducted data analysis and statistical inferences. The project members enthusiastically introduced their research process to the visitors, allowing everyone to deeply appreciate the close connection between sports and mathematics.
The four major math clubs also held unique and intriguing activities. The football tic-tac-toe and tennis 24-point game of the STEM Doge Club attracted many students to stop and participate, challenging themselves and experiencing the joy of mathematics through these games. The CS League Club organized programming to draw circles and predict the value of pi, allowing students to experience the charm of mathematics through coding. The probability problem games of the Math Modeling Club and the quiz activities of the Math Club also garnered much attention, with everyone actively participating to showcase their mathematical talents.
On March 14th, it was finally Pi day! Students from all grades gathered together to celebrate this special day with a variety of colorful activities. Excellent project presentations and displays, mathematical magic performances, and fun games combining sports and mathematics were interspersed throughout the event, allowing students to experience the charm of mathematics amidst laughter and cheers. Winners of the games and speakers also received specially designed Pi Day badges as recognition.
The Pi Day Celebration Week has come to a successful end, but the celebration continues. On March 15th, Principal Ma and Ms. Liu, the head of the High School Math Department, awarded certificates and prizes to students who excelled in board game analysis, project presentations, and logo design, to acknowledge and encourage their enthusiasm for mathematics and their spirit of exploration.
In the afternoon, an exciting mathematics debate kicked off in the Xianmian Building Annex Auditorium. The theme of the debate was "In high school, students should be encouraged to use technology/manual calculations more in math class." The debaters demonstrated outstanding critical thinking and linguistic skills, captivating the audience, who applauded and cheered for both sides during the intense debate.
Our school also received good news from the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML). A team composed of six students from Grade 9 and Grade 10 won the National Silver Award in the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) and ranked in the top 100 globally. Congratulations to them!
This week's activities not only allowed students to deepen their understanding of the connection between mathematics and sports but also sparked their interest and passion for mathematics. In this enthusiastic atmosphere, students actively participated, learned from each other, and progressed together, fully demonstrating the achievements and characteristics of mathematics education in the school. We believe that in the days to come, students will continue to explore and advance in the world of mathematics, creating even more brilliance.
