Puxi Campus G1: “Celebrating the 100th Day for Centenarians, Reflecting on the Past to Gain New Wisdom”——100th Day Commemoration for the G1 Students at School
In the first grade hallway, an old man and an old lady are approaching. The old man has a head full of white hair and walks unsteadily. The old lady is dressed in a vintage blue printed skirt with thick gray hair on her head and coughs occasionally as she walks forward. At this moment, several other elderly people appear at the corner of the hallway. Why did the energetic children turn “white-haired” overnight? Why, it turns out that March 6th is the 100th day commemoration for the grade one students at school. They are celebrating the holiday by dressing up as centenarians!
The costumes adorned by the students are diverse and creative. Some have walking canes, some are stooped, some have wrinkled faces, some wear vintage red skirts, and there are also those wearing gold-rimmed glasses and berets from the last century. These “elders” are whimsically doing their work, which is extremely amusing!
The math class activities also revolve around “one hundred” without getting bored. First, the children watched mathematics videos related to “one hundred”, then used their previously learned knowledge of tens and ones to complete various mathematical exercises related to that magic number. One group of children needed to find 100 from the myriad of numbers and patterns, some were ten-frames, some were ten-blocks, and some were made up of tally marks. Another group of children added 10 hairs to each elderly person based on the knowledge that 10 tens equals 100, creating different hairstyles for each of the elderly, forming an interesting portrait. There was also a group of children counting “100” balloons of different shapes and drawing a picture graph and tally chart based on the quantity. Different levels of the activities reviewed different math skills, and the children gained happiness from the activities.
The diverse English activities also exercised the children’s vocabulary! Listing 100 English vocabulary items exhausted their brains. Finding the given vocabulary related to “one hundred” in the vast sea of English letters tested their familiarity with vocabulary and keen eyesight. “If you have 100 dollars, how would you spend it?” Such an interesting topic fully opened the children’s imagination, going to Disneyland, buying a rocket… all kinds of fantastic ideas adorned their rich childhood. Writing down the knowledge they had learned in first 100 days of school was the best review of their lives being grade one students. Seeing the page filled with content, they felt proud of themselves.
In the personal growth class, students had the opportunity to draw a “centenarian” portrait for themselves. Adding white hair, a few wrinkles on the face, and wearing a pair of reading glasses, the image of an aged sage vividly appeared on paper. The children also wrote down what they would be like as “centenarians” and left a message for their future selves.
Looking back on the 100 days at school, you will be surprised to discover the changes in everyone. Some have already developed some good study habits, some can express themselves more bravely, some have learned important rules of interpersonal communication, and some have found confidence in the learning process. Each person is moving forward as an independent learner in their own way. The elderly symbolize wisdom and stability, and we believe that the children in grade one will definitely become wiser and more mature in a healthy environment!
