IAA Club: Quindecennial Anniversary
The 2023-2024 school year marks the quindecennial anniversary of the SHSID International Affairs Association (IAA) Club.
The past semester has been incredibly successful for the IAA. Founded in 2008, the IAA club focuses on training delegates for MUN conferences, and improving students' research, speech, and writing capabilities in weekly afterschool sessions. This semester was no different, with the IAA expanding to include over 80 members and competing in international and national competitions.
The first major conference attended by the IAA members this fall was the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC), hosted online from November 11-12 by students from the University of Pennsylvania. 14 SHSID students competed across the two ILMUNC committees, winning both of the 2 Best Delegate Awards as well as an impressive total of 2 Outstanding Delegate Awards, 3 Honorable Mentions, and 1 Verbal Accommodation.
As part of the efforts to further enhance delegates' experience, the IAA hosted and organized an internal conference, the IAAMUN, in November. Delegates, including some from the middle school MUN club, were able to participate and build their skills under the guidance of student coaches and other experienced IAA members.
In December, a delegation of 14 IAA members competed in the MUNUC-SFLS, an offline conference here in Shanghai organized jointly by the University of Chicago and Shanghai Foreign Language School. Boasting 7 committees, this was the first UChicago-China conference to be hosted in person since before the pandemic, and 14 SHSID delegates enthusiastically signed up. After 4 days of hard-fought competition, the IAA delegation ultimately championed in all 6 of the committees they were assigned, receiving 6 Best Delegate Awards, 4 Outstanding Delegate Awards, 1 Honorable Mention, and 1 Verbal Accommodation, as well as the distinguished Best Delegation Award commemorating the group's success as a whole.
This past winter, the IAA attended the Harvard MUN in Boston, the most prestigious conference globally. Before HMUN, the IAA hosted numerous training sessions to prepare for the large and challenging conference. The results were exceptional: 1 Best Delegate, 3 Outstanding Delegates, 1 Honorable Mention, and 1 Diplomatic Commendation.
The SHSID delegates proved their perseverance and cooperation by constantly adapting to circumstances and overcoming challenges throughout the HMUN. The IAA members worked with the international delegates from various countries and put forth tremendous effort to achieve outstanding results. Overall, the HMUN was an invaluable opportunity for the IAA to extend their skillset and step out of their comfort zone in a one-of-a-kind experience.
This semester, the IAA will assist in hosting the Oxford Global MUN-SHSID in April. OXMUN 2024 marks the return of the annual SHSID event after four years and will involve more than a hundred students from across China. This conference is open to all SHSID students and will be met with continuous preparation and training from the IAA leadership team and members.
The IAA strives to continue its streak of success and looks forward to a fruitful year ahead.
