High School Math: Brilliant Chapters in Multiple Fields

March 8, 2024

In the recently released results of the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), 11 students from SHSID High School achieved excellent scores of 10 or above. Five of them have met the USA(J)MO qualification scores. Congratulations!

In addition to outstanding academic achievements, the High School Math Department has also been exploring cross-disciplinary integration of mathematics in various fields, showcasing the charm of mathematics on different stages and giving all students the opportunity to apply their learning and embrace the universality of mathematics. Currently, the high school students have been performing original mathematics plays for the last two consecutive years. In 2022, they made their debut with the mathematics play When the Origin of Geometry Meets the Nine Chapters of Arithmetic, which featured ancient geometric tales as well as contemporary mathematical anecdotes, both differences between Chinese and Western mathematics, and the complementary similarities they share... In 2023, the students presented their new play Mr. Kepler's Propositions, tracing the footprints of the Pythagorean theorem and the golden ratio, and contrasting Chinese ancient mathematics from an international perspective, showcasing its outstanding discoveries.

In recent years, the High School Math Department has also carefully designed a variety of exciting events for exploring cross-disciplinary exploration for Pi Day. The collaboration with the Art Department in the "Maesthetics" exhibition encouraged students to use art as a medium to express their understanding and passion for mathematics. The collaboration with the Music Department on the "Math·Drama" stage inspired students to theatrically showcase the charm of mathematics. This year, the Math Department will collaborate with the P.E. Department, encouraging students to use their mathematical knowledge to analyze team data, discover game strategies, and design logos for athletic events. Students will be able to reveal the magical applications of mathematical concepts and principles in sports and games in an interesting way. Based on the achievements of the projects at the beginning of the semester, there will be rich lunchtime exhibitions every day next week, and a large-scale classroom activity on March 14th. Stay tuned!
