History and Geography Department: G10 History Teacher's Personal Collection Display and Class Activity

February 20, 2024

After the winter break, Mr. Kieran Nelson brought back two big suitcases full of surprises from Canada, including his precious personal collection of books, albums, coins, stamps, medals, badges, posters, and other items related to world history in the 20th century, which are full of antiquity and mysteriousness that inspire people to explore. The theme of these "artifacts" fits in well with what the 10th graders will be studying in this semester. It was clear that Mr. Nelson had come prepared, and he generously shared the collection with the group and then discussed with them how they could use these objects in the classroom.

After some pre-school observation and discussion, based on the goal of stimulating interest in learning, G10 teachers decided to lead the tour first, and members of the History Club were mobilized to help set up the exhibit and prepare the presentation. In the class the day before the exhibition, the teachers introduced the students to an overview of 20th century history, and on the afternoon of February 20, the exciting display unfolded in the recording classroom of the Zhentao Building. The students of G10 visited the exhibits in separate sessions, and experienced the charm of the physical historical materials up close. In addition, Mr. Nelson passionately shared anecdotes about his own process of collecting these objects, which were sometimes shocking and sometimes funny. The students listened carefully, took notes, asked questions, and gradually built up a vivid understanding of the objects and the history behind them under the guidance and interpretation of their teachers. The visit and discussion were very meaningful to everyone involved.
