G11-12 2023 SHSID Career Day: Connecting Students with a World of Career Opportunities
On December 6, 2023, SHSID united junior and senior students with a panel of 18 professionals, all parents of SHSID students or SHSID alumni, to share their experiences in various fields. This event was a great opportunity for students nearing high school graduation to learn directly from these seasoned professionals about diverse career paths.
The sessions were organized into different professional themes, offering students a wide range of knowledge. In the financial and analytical area, the speaker demonstrated how mathematics and risk analysis are integrated into the insurance sector, providing a practical perspective of the actuarial profession. While in the area of financial services, students gained insights into the multifaceted finance industry. In the legal sphere, an in-depth overview of the legal profession, covering aspects of legal education and career progression, was given. An SHSID alumnus shared his journey from SHSID to his roles in the Partnership for Public Service and the United Nations Development Programme.
In the technological sphere, different experts from their fields shared their experiences and described their careers. Students were led to explore the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, new energy vehicles in sustainable technological advancement, mapping science in city development, and the profound impact of data on digital landscape. Students interested in healthcare and wellness also gained the chance of investigating the benefits of chiropractic care in healthcare and the fundamental aspects of surgery. Apart from these, career-introduction courses like art and music were also introduced to help strengthen students’ future plans. From these lectures, students were informed of the basic requirements and daily work of each career while also being inspired by the lecturers’ own experiences and advice.
The 2023 Career Day was an enlightening and pragmatic experience for students which helped them gain valuable insights from seasoned professionals. As students stand on the threshold of universities and the real world, this event served as an invaluable platform to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse careers that lie ahead.
