History Department: Grade 7 History Project - The Pax Romana Festival

December 7, 2023

The Pax Romana was an important period in ancient Roman history that lasted for approximately 200 years, starting from the Roman Emperor Augustus. During this period, the Roman Empire achieved political stability and economic prosperity, and became a powerful nation by implementing a series of political and social reforms, while strengthening the empire's borders and internal security.

The history project assignment for 7th grade focused on the Pax Romana and created a festival to celebrate the achievements of this period. This project was a collaborative one, students needed to work together to create a stall to host one aspect of the Pax Romana. Examples of the stall topics included: trade and economy, law and order, infrastructure and construction, expansion and education, literature and art. These aspects were chosen to help to present the prosperity and stability of this period.

After two weeks of preparation, the display days arrived. The students presented their project on December 4th and December 5th. Finally the students were able to take on the role of ancient Roman people and celebrate the Pax Romana Festival! Each history class was divided into two groups; these groups took turns to participate in the activities hosted by other history classes. Thereby they could have more opportunities to learn and enjoy the festival.

While our class time was limited, the student’s interest and curiosity in Roman culture was infinite. Through this project, students not only needed to cooperate with each other and brainstorm good ideas in their preparation process, but also needed to organize their activity in an orderly manner on the project display day. After the presentation in a self-reflection, the students answered questions about what aspect was the favorite or the least favorite and how to improve next time. They spoke about whether they prepared well, and took responsibilities seriously. They also considered how much effort they put in to make their activity appealing. These reflections are also precious, as they are representative of the student’s growth. The only down side for the students was that the time to take part in the festivities was too short, because they all enjoyed the activities so much and wanted to play more. This is the best review that we all could ask for!
