Grade 9 Assembly: My Journey in Baseball
November 28 was the day of the weekly assembly. As the students gradually settled down, the image on the big screen had already caught the attention of many: a baseball that had gone through the trials of time, illustrated by the dust and marks that came into view. For this assembly, Matthew Xie was the student speaker. He has been training in baseball since he was six years old and has cultivated his love for this sport over the past eight years. He introduced everyone to his passion for this sport and provided guidance to students by sharing his experiences with baseball. Matthew hopes that, through him sharing about his passion for the sport, everyone can truly understand and be captivated by the sport of baseball.
Whether it's the unpredictability of what's going to happen during an inning or the time you get to spend with your teammates out on the field, there's a lot to enjoy in baseball. However, for Matthew, baseball is a sport that requires dedication. Whether it is the time required for practice or one’s own physical strength and fitness, one must make sacrifices in order to improve themselves. Not only is it physical training, forcing you to learn how to plan and react during a game, but also a mental one. "Baseball is a game of the mind. A professional baseball player is able to throw a ball faster than a blink of the eye." This is a great test of skill not only for the batter, but also for the pitcher throwing the ball.
However, practice is never in vain. Consistency pays off. Matthew said: “The amount of time that you practice is closely related to your skill. The progress of your practice is easily measurable.” Matthew Xie shared his understanding of baseball with the ninth-grade students, bringing them the thrill and joy of baseball that he had personally experienced, allowing the students to truly feel the fascination of this beloved sport.
