Bridging Communication Between the Deaf and Hearing World

On November 10th, the SHSID Sign Language Club organized a unique club event. With the support of the school and club instructor Ms. Alice Hu, ten students and two teachers from Shanghai Youth Technical School for the Deaf were invited to our school for a cultural exchange. Mr. Ma, Principal of SHSID High School Section, and Ms. Liu, Director of the Student Center, also attended the event, providing support and encouragement to the students. The event brought students from both schools together, aiming to promote cultural diversity on campus and to break the barrier between the Deaf and hearing world through sign language. This activity brought the students closer and further allowed deaf and hearing individuals to bond through common language.

The event began with an exciting ice-breaker to help students from both schools know each other better. Each member introduced themselves using sign language. In this simple interactive moment, the language barriers that one might expect were non-existent, creating a warm atmosphere and allowing members of the SHSID Sign Language Club to put the sign language learned in class to good use!

Next, the students engaged in a lively and fun game of charades where the students had to use gestures and sign to act out what was shown to them. This was not only a way for members of the Sign Club to practice sign language but also tested their teamwork and collaboration abilities.

The most memorable activity was the "Sign Language Matching Game". Each student received a small piece of paper and not only had to sign out what was written down, but also find the classmate with the matching paper. This game resembled a silent conversation, breaking the limits of language and bringing the students' closer together.

Finally, the students recorded a short video together to commemorate the occassion. Members of the SHSID Sign Language Club expressed passion and friendship through sign in a video that is sure to be kept as a treasured memory by all. At the end of the event, our school carefully prepared souvenirs for the students and teachers from Shanghai Youth Technical School for the Deaf, bringing the day to a joyus conclusion.

The SHSID Sign Language Club was founded in 2020. Its weekly activities allow students to understand the basic characteristics of Chinese Sign Language, the language of the Deaf community, through situational learning. The practical activities also enable students to engage deeply with the Deaf community, advocating for more compassionate individuals in society to pay attention to them, and understand and embrace the Deaf culture. This event created a communicative atmosphere for students from both schools, building interactive bridges. Especially for members of the SHSID Sign Language Club, they, along with the Deaf community, experienced the beauty of a silent world through sign language. We look forward to more opportunities like this in the future.
