Social Science Department: Harvard Business Publishing Simulation Game Held at SHSID
Nearing the start of the Business Pioneer Case Challenge (BPC), teachers from the BPC Committee, Ms. Stephanie & Ms. Fiona, came to Shanghai High School International Division on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 7 to host a classic business simulation game for high school students to prepare for BPC and have their first experience of a Harvard Business School classroom.

Students, in their teams of 3-4 people, took their first attempt at the classic Harvard Business School entry module, New Venture Simulation: The Food Truck Challenge. For an hour, students were placed in the shoes of a decision-maker, dividing roles (CEO, CFO, CSO, CMO) within their team, and together faced real-world challenges. Their task was to make a series of decisions from choosing their product (ice cream, smoothie, or frozen yogurt), to deciding what location to sell in, then their method of distribution (food truck or pushcart), along with identifying their target market to set their strategies. All these decisions would then generate the amount of revenue each team was able to make. The ultimate goal was to make the most revenue through multiple rounds of decisions and outplacing the other teams.

The competition between the students was fierce but was also an inspiring adventure. Everyone started off with no previous experience with the simulation game, but after a few attempts, they were able to quickly grasp the concept of the challenge. Between the rounds of simulation, Ms. Stephanie interacted with the students to analyze their decisions and did some further breakdown of the game, giving them the closest experience to Harvard’s case-learning methods.

This activity was an awesome opportunity for students to get their hands on HBS simulation games early, better preparing them for the upcoming events at the Business Pioneer Case Challenge.
