High School Math Department: The Fascinating Integration of Chinese Culture and Math
On October 27, Dr. Wu from the High School Math Department presented an outstanding open class for Grade-9 students. The theme of the class was the integration of Chinese culture and ancient mathematics through compasses and straight-edged constructions. This class allowed students to deeply appreciate the charm of mathematics and the wisdom of our ancient ancestors, while also fostering a deeper interest in the subject.
Dr. Wu's teaching design emphasized understanding the principles together with learning the methods. She encouraged students to explore multiple perspectives and solutions. During the class, Dr. Wu frequently asked questions and guided students to independently explore, compare, and summarize, using the compass and straight-edged tools and methods recorded by ancient scholars. This allowed students not only to gain mathematical knowledge and understand mathematical concepts, but also to appreciate the mathematical charm throughout the long history of China. The wisdom of many ancient scholars laid the foundation for modern mathematics, and their ways of thinking and problem-solving methods still hold irreplaceable significance today. Dr. Wu's teaching method guided the students to constantly progress and challenge themselves. It also cultivated students' creativity and problem-solving abilities.
