Primary Subjects: Young Designers at Work

October 23, 2023

One of the tasks of the science class this semester is to familiarize the students with the process of a designer's work. In order to make the class memorable, while also as hands-on as possible, grade one science teachers facilitated a creative and enjoyable experiment for students in week 8.

The experiment was designed to allow each student to follow every step of the design process. First, the students were introduced to a problem: people (marbles) couldn’t cross a river (a large bowl of water). The students had to design a boat made from tinfoil to see how many people they could safely transport across the river. After the teachers’ modelling, the students started designing.

After much deliberation and thoughtful discussion came the fun part: testing! Bathed in zeal and excitement, each student got to test their boat. Although the results varied, each of the designers had endless fun with it. After completing testing, students were asked to reflect in their groups about their boat’s success or shortfalls and then had to redesign their model.

Once completed, students could again share their work with their group mates. This is the last part of the design process: communication.

We believe that with this hands-on acquired knowledge and skills, our young designers will develop an innate sense of curiosity and passion for problem-solving, guiding them towards success in the future.
