The "Pearl of the Silk Road — Dunhuang Grottoes Art Exhibition Summary Review
The Dunhuang Grottoes that are located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, China, had attracted scholars and archaeologists from all over the world due to the sheer quantity of its artifacts and their high artistic value. Thanks to innumerable scholars dedicating themselves to the protection, organization, research, and promotion of Dunhuang, more people are able to experience the awe induced by the cultural relics of history and art. So, what kind of spark can the Gen Z ignite with the grand and magnificent sculptures and paintings of Mogao Caves?
From September 4 to 30, 2023, Shanghai High School International Division and the Dunhuang Research Institute jointly held the "Pearl of the Silk Road - Dunhuang Grottoes Art Exhibition" at Shanghai High School Xianmiantang Annex Building. This event brought Dunhuang into the campus, infusing new vitality into Dunhuang manuscripts and traditional culture.
During the art exhibition, high school volunteers from Shanghai High School International Division, under the guidance of their teachers, worked tirelessly over the summer to complete the production of QR code content for exhibits, guide explanation training, and the layout of all exhibition areas. The exhibition was displayed through six aspects, featuring replicas of Dunhuang murals, related books, ancient sculptures, early imaging materials, and audiovisual materials.
The month-long exhibition attracted a large number of teachers and students to visit. It’s worth mentioning that in order to assist the audience to understand and feel the charm of Dunhuang art more deeply, the volunteer students put in a great amount of effort and hard work. Not only did they displayed the spirit and insights of Dunhuang art to the audience through physical exhibits, QR code creation for exhibit information, guided explanations, and other forms, but the volunteers also made full use of their strengths in video production and multilingual writing to share their experiences with Dunhuang artifacts. They record videos to document their unique insights about the charm, cultural heritage, and aesthetic appeal of Dunhuang art. They also formed writing groups to delve into the history and culture of Dunhuang, and wrote respective reflective articles. These articles, presented in different languages, allow more people to appreciate the charm of Dunhuang.
The "Pearl of the Silk Road — Dunhuang Grottoes Art Exhibition" comprehensively showcased various aspects of Dunhuang in a limited space. Not only did it displayed Dunhuang physically, but the exhibition also revealed the history of the Silk Road and Dunhuang, the excavation of the grottoes, the art of murals and colored sculptures, and the generational dedication of preserving cultural treasuries.
