Middle School Chinese Non-Native Group | G8: Journeying Through Time, Dancing in Moonlight
With moonlight as gentle as water and the night's ambiance filled with tenderness, the Mid-Autumn Festival has arrived. In this most tender and poetic of all annual occasions, the Grade 8 students of SHSID gathered together to weave a fantastical journey through time – the Moonlight Treasure Box event.
The theme of this event is "Journeying Through Time," and the bold calligraphy of Mr. Ni Minxue, Director of SHSID Middle and Primary School Teaching Affairs Center, which reads "Moonlight Treasure Box," has opened the doors of time for us. It led the audience on a voyage through the past and present, allowing us to savor the different flavors of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The entire event took the form of class textbook dramas, with each class meticulously preparing their performances to transport everyone back to different historical moments.
During the event, apart from the captivating class performances, there were also some delightful mini-activities woven into the program. For instance, riddle-solving became an engaging part of the celebration. With their intelligence and quick thinking, the students illuminated this Mid-Autumn Festival with happiness. Additionally, the recitation of classical poetry played an indispensable role. As the famous line goes, "When will the bright moon come, to drink wine and ask the sky?" Amidst the clear recitations of Prelude to Water Melody, the poetry and the elegance of traditional Chinese culture during the Mid-Autumn Festival were conveyed to every member of the audience.
In the segment featuring class performances, we were treated to a variety of splendid acts. First was "The Secret of the Elixir," a modern adaptation of the story of Chang'e, the goddess of the moon, embarking on her journey. Chang'e Flying to the Moon "and" Wu Gang cuts the laurel"showed the infinite charm of Chinese mythology. Next came "The Mooncake Uprising," set in the late Yuan Dynasty, where the Han people endured years of oppression under the Mongols. Brave Han rebels initiated an uprising and concealed their messages within mooncakes, a daring act that coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival. Following that, we witnessed "Journey to 2023: Cousin's Arrival," in which Chang'e time-traveled to the present day. She experienced the pressures and troubles of middle school life but also discovered the warmth of family and friendship. Each performance brimmed with creativity and showcased the students' deep appreciation for Chinese traditional culture.
The award presentation segment proved to be a highlight of the event, with thunderous applause and cheers greeting each class's performances. Each student received their well-deserved honor, making it a truly rewarding experience for all. After the awards were presented, everyone gathered together, capturing this special Mid-Autumn Festival in a group photograph, etching it into the deepest corners of our memories.
During this fantastical journey within the Moonlight Treasure Box, we not only celebrated the full moon's radiance but also traversed through time, experiencing the contrast between past and present. This experience deepened our appreciation for the precious bonds of family and friendship. As the silver moon hung high, and the fragrance of golden osmanthus filled the air, the warmth of the Mid-Autumn Festival will forever remain in our hearts, just like the ever-present full moon. May the warmth and beauty of this Mid-Autumn Festival accompany us always, leaving behind a treasure trove of cherished memories.
