2022-2023 School Year Review on High School Humanities, Arts and Physical Education
During the 2022-2023 academic year, SHSID high school focused on the goal of establishing a solid humanities education and promoting well-rounded development in the areas of arts and physical education. To achieve this, the school prioritized collaboration among different subjects and consistently worked towards fostering innovation and advancement.
SHSID students excel in English and Chinese writing, participating actively in prestigious essay competitions and earning recognition for their unique perspectives and strong writing abilities. Multiple students have been honored with awards in the John Locke Institute Essay Competition, covering diverse subjects such as philosophy, economics, and psychology. "By the Hearth," a collection of short stories and poetry, was released in 2023, featuring 44 original works from 15 talented high school authors in creative writing class. Our students have recently achieved first place in various categories like English poetry, prose, and non-fiction outside of school. In addition, one student earned a first prize in the World Chinese Student Essay Competition, while ten others received second and third prizes.
During this school year, high school students excelled in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, and drama, winning 11 first prizes, 1 second prize, and 4 third prizes in district and city-level competitions. They also participated in various on campus art activities like Performance Season, Theatre Festival, Arts Festival, Top Ten Singers competition, and Instrumental Music Contests, which aimed to enhance their artistic competence and create a refined atmosphere on campus. The 2023 Performance Season provided students with a platform to showcase their talents through eleven special performances. The annual Theatre Festival was captivating, featuring a variety of themes including reality, traditional stories, and innovative stage plays. It was divided into five categories: classical drama, modern drama, musicals, original plays, and adapted classics. Through drama performances, students improved their language skills, social cognition, imagination, creativity, leadership, and confidence.
SHSID 30th Anniversary Artworks Exhibition was held at the Liu Haisu Art Museum in May, attracting wide attention. On the opening day, a record-breaking 912 people attended, and a total of 7,581 visitors attended throughout the exhibition period. The event was extensively covered by dozens of mainstream media outlets. With over 400 artworks, including oil paintings, ink wash paintings, sculptures, and mixed media, the exhibition showcased the students' artistic skills and aesthetic pursuits, highlighting the school's emphasis on high-quality art education.
The school prioritizes physical fitness and teamwork, providing a supportive environment for students. With guidance from coaches and encouragement from teammates, our Stallion varsities achieved remarkable results in various games. The U19 men's football team, despite being 0-1 behind, persevered and became champion in the SSSFL final. The U19 men's and women's basketball teams achieved a double crown in the SSSBL with exceptional skills and teamwork. The men's volleyball team secured first place in the SSSVL, showcasing technique and willpower. The badminton team displayed superb skills, winning the U19 SSSA Championship. The table tennis and laser shooting teams triumphed in the Xu Hui District Student Games. The swimming team faced challenges in competitions, embodying the spirit of "health, progress, unity, and transcendence" in sports.
Six students from our school garnered great success by representing the school and earning the sixth place in the World School Chess Tournament. Additionally, one of our students has been chosen to represent the Hong Kong China team and will compete in the upcoming Asian Games Hangzhou.
Investment in education and teaching activities in the humanities, social sciences, music, fine arts, and physical education at SHSID has yielded impressive results for students. They have not only excelled in these fields but have also developed valuable skills and abilities through social practice projects. As a result, a group of students from the class of 2023 have been accepted into renowned universities worldwide. These include programs in Comparative Literature at Princeton University, Literary Arts at Brown University, International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania, Economics at the University of Chicago, Psychology, Polictics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science, History at the University of Oxford, Psychology, Philosophy, and Linguistics at the University of Oxford, Education at the University of Cambridge, various disciplines at Sciences Po, Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design, Music Performance at the Berkeley College of Music, and Fashion Imaging and Illustration and Contemporary Media Cultures at the University of the Arts London, among others.
Previous students from various graduating classes have recently been making a homecoming to the alma mater. Some pursued their passion for humanities during their university years, while others embarked on successful career paths. These alumni have been visiting the campus to witness the latest changes and enthusiastically share their experiences in academics, campus life, and work with their former teachers.
Among the returning graduates are accomplished TV program producer from the media studies program, rising star in the fashion industry from the school of Art and Design, aspiring legal professional who has completed the studies at the prestigious Law School, and talented director who has recently showcased the graduation works.
