Puxi G4-5 丨Puberty Talk — Parent Class
Puberty profoundly impacts growth, self-awareness, relationships, career planning, and attitudes. SHSID Puxi campus hosted a class for Year 4 and 5 parents. Dr. Zhang, Xinhua Hospital's Clinical Psychology Department doctor, gave a popular talk on puberty, covering definitions, developmental characteristics, and measures for parents to handle in school.
How to Understand Puberty?
Dr. Zhang firstly explained puberty to parents and teachers from three perspectives: intellectual, emotional and volitional and personality development.
The Adolescent Brain — Fast Development
Puberty is an important period for intellectual development, during which adolescents' thinking and cognitive levels are significantly enhanced. They acquire a high level of abstract thinking and logical reasoning, and show a strong curiosity in social, political, and economic matters, as well as the ability to think independently and create unique ideas.
Emotion and Will in puberty — Complications and Conflicts
Puberty is a crucial time for cognitive development. Adolescents develop high-level abstract thinking and logical reasoning, become curious about social, political, and economic issues, and can think independently and generate unique ideas.
Personality in puberty — Individualization and Socialization
Puberty plays a key role in shaping personality. Physical, psychological, and social factors all contribute to adolescent personality development. During this time, adolescents reflect on their self-image, traits, and habits. This critical period establishes personality differences and identification.
Growing-up Worries and Solutions
Many children often grow up with worries such as self-identity, interpersonal and academic pressures, etc.. Zhang has analyzed the issues that adolescents will face during puberty, including emotional and academic challenges. By understanding these issues, parents and teenagers can better handle them.
Parental Response
Parents should communicate with sincerity and an open mind to understand their children's needs and expectations. Building trust and respecting their individuality and independence can create a positive family atmosphere, allowing children to face growing up with confidence.
Bringing Together a Tripartite Approach to Puberty
To promote adolescent mental health, cooperation is needed from families, schools, and society. Families should focus on communication and healthy interests, schools should provide mental health education, and society should offer cultural resources and support services. Through these joint efforts, a healthy and harmonious environment can be created for young people to realize their self-worth and achievements based on their mental health.
Q&A
After the sharing, Dr. Zhang answered parents' questions on their children's studies and mental health, receiving appreciation from the parents.
At the end of the presentation, Ms. Chris, director of SHSID Puxi G4-5, said that puberty is the most challenging stage in a child's development and affects their whole life. We need to prepare our children psychologically, relationally and in terms of support. Only if parents change their mode of dealing with their children can they resolve conflicts and become intelligent parents.
Puberty brings changes and challenges, but we can help our children by cooperating between home and school with expert guidance. Our commitment and care as parents and teachers can support their future. Let's work together for our children’s bright future!
