High School Math: Dramath Wrap-up

June 13, 2023

This year, the Mathematics Department collaborated with the Music Department to hold a Pi Day event themed "DraMath" that spanned the entire semester. Students formed teams and produced theatrical works based on mathematics, bringing us an endless stream of surprises! In these works, ten different mathematical branches were represented, with mathematicians from different eras coming together and stories ranging from Archimedes' legendary density measurement process to the discovery of the Pythagorean theorem. The plotlines were full of creativity, and the video shooting and editing were comparable to that of a blockbuster film! At the end of the semester, we presented awards for outstanding mathematical drama works!

The teams with the highest votes from ninth and tenth grades have already performed on the MIX Day theatre stage! There was not an empty seat in the audience, and the applause was thunderous. Let's follow the camera and relive these two fascinating stories!

The ninth-grade play follows the storyline of a teacher explaining the origin of the renowned Cardano Formula. The story revolves around a mathematical duel between Gerolamo Cardano and Nicolaus Copernicus, in which Cardano presents a cubic equation that stumps both Nicolaus Copernicus and his followers. The play is a small-scale jukebox musical with parodies of songs from Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals such as Hadestown and Heathers: The Musical. All characters in this play were reimaginations of the original mathematicians; for instance, Nicolaus Copernicus is head of a Garlic Math Club, filled with garlic and math lovers, and Gerolamo Cardano was extra sassy and haughty as he would have been in history.

The tenth-grade playscript was inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet; a pair of star-crossed lovers try to break the conflict between the two major mathematical families of geometry and algebra to find unity. This is the "love" story of Kevin Luo and Kevin Lei; this is the history between the two major mathematical families of geometry and algebra. The play is divided into two main parts: one part introduces the family feud between Algebra & Geometry, where blood is lost and tears are shed in the preservation of tradition; another part is more heartwarming, as we watch the two Kevins break the barriers their families built and find congruence amongst dissimilarity. In this story, each character has their own unique personality and role. Geometry and Algebra eventually let go of their inseparable animosity, symbolizing the complementary nature of geometry and algebra in Math!

Although the duration of the two plays was limited, the audience traveled through mathematics, history, music, and drama, enjoying a pleasant time.

What subject will Mathematics collaborate with in next year's Pi Day event? Stay tuned!
