Music For People: Children's Day Charity Concert
MfP (Music or People) is a charity club founded by students of Shanghai High School International Division in 2016. The aim is to spread love and care through students’ music, relieve patients’ emotions and troubles, and help build a harmonious doctor-patient relationship. Since its establishment, more than 200 students have participated in nearly 40 charity concerts in Renji Hospital, the Children’s Medical Center, and other places, which have been highly praised by the hospitals as well as patients and their families. The club includes students from Grades 3 to 12 presenting a high-level musical performance full of blessings.
In the afternoon of June 2, the club held a special performance titled "Children's Day Charity Concert" in the lobby of the Out-patient Building of the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. The repertoire included classical piano, pop songs, brass ensembles, and more. This activity was hosted by Max, the current head of the group, and Cici, a member of the group. The members performed the long-lost music, hoping to offer love and care to everyone.
Under the cloud of the epidemic and the renovation work of the Children's Medical Center, MfP has not gone to the Children's Medical Center to hold activities for nearly two years. In this hot summer, MfP has gone back again to bring hospital patients a variety of music programs. They also hope that children can forget their physical ailments for a short time, enjoy the beauty of music, and learn the different sounds of different musical instruments and the differences between classical and popular music.
During the performance, the students' exquisite performance attracted the medical staff, patients, and family members to stop and enjoy. In particular, some anime-related theme music attracted many younger children, such as City in the Sky and Summer. The familiar melodies were played by wind instruments that are not commonly used among children or for music geared towards children. The sounds of some children shouting, "That’s my favorite piece!" and other kinds of high praise, gave the members a unique sense of achievement and interaction with the whole community.
After many beautiful pieces, Sophie and Edward brought in a horn piano ensemble of A Whole New World. It was the theme song from the Disney movie Aladdin. It was soft and beautiful, soulful and spontaneous. This Children's Day themed charity performance helped the hospital community of patients, family members, and staff so that the hospital could become “a whole new world” where children could relax and enjoy the music.
