High School Biology Department: "The World of Light and Shadow" — A Lecture on Retinas
On June 1, Prof. Weng Shijun from the Institute of Brain Science, Fudan University, gave a lecture titled "The World of Light and Shadow" in the Zhentao Building B1 recording room, which attracted the participation of many students and biology group teachers.
Prof. Weng first showed the audience many interesting images. Different angles and visual habits made each student see different visual effects, which triggered a heated discussion among students. Through discussion and summary, the students understood the concept of visual illusions like "negative space illusion", "negative afterimage", "silhouette illusion", etc., and realized that "what is seen is not always true", which stimulated the students' interest in the study of visual nerves. Later, Prof. Weng introduced the structure and function of the retina and showed pictures of nerve cells in many different and fascinating shapes under the microscope, which impressed the teachers and students. Prof. Weng also shared with the teachers and students his main research domain - intrinsically photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (ipRGC). He briefly discussed the relationship between ipRGC and myopia and emotion. This content aroused the students' consideration of international vision protection. The audience benefitted a lot from Prof. Weng's introduction about retinas.
