Grades 11-12: Music Corner
During lunchtime on May 19, 2023, the Music Corner in the XMT Annex was once again filled with the sound of music. However, the audience quickly discovered a quintessential change in the cast today: As the theme of today’s music corner was “Come See the Seniors One Last Time”, almost all the performers were in their senior year, and this performance would be one of their last at SHSID.
The performance began with Nina Ma and Crystal Zhao's rendition of "Not Strong Enough" by Boygenius. Between the tranquil strums of Nina's guitar and the softness of Crystal's voice, the performers weaved a touching narrative about a love beyond everyday life, leaving the audience immersed in emotions long after the song concluded. Next, they performed "Chinese Satellite" by Phoebe Bridgers, which once again transported the audience to the deep and beautiful world the duo constructed.
Unlike the tranquil style of Nina and Crystal, our next performer, Catie Doran, has a powerful and inspiring voice. Ever since she fell in love with music, she has performed countless times, both on and off campus, and has never stopped perfecting her skills in the process. With her rendition of Mariah Carey's "Hero," sung in her signature alto style, Catie replaced the smooth tones of the original with her own energy and strength. Her voice was like a ray of sunlight bursting through the clouds, full of hope and promise for life, inspiring the audience to find the motivation and joy within their own lives. Naturally, the audience greeted her with enthusiastic applause and cheers.
Finally, the performances came to a close with a song from SHSID's music club, Live2Drama (L2D). Since its establishment in 2012, L2D has made it its mission to bring a magnificent musical production to campus each year, and today's performance of "Why We Build the Wall," an excerpt from this year's production of Hadestown, achieved just that. Steven Sun's portrayal of Hades, with his slow deliberate movements and disdainful glances, captured the essence of the authoritative and exploitative leader. As the applause echoed, the Music Corner performances successfully concluded.
