Grade 11 Assembly: Birding Introduction

May 23, 2023

During the morning session on May 18, the weekly assembly took place in the auditorium of the Xianmian Building. A highlight of the assembly was Chloe Gu, an 11th-grade student at SHSID, who shared her inspiring journey into the world of birding with her fellow classmates.

Chloe's story began with a surprising twist, as she initially had no interest in birding. However, it was Ms. Zeng who played an important role in igniting her passion for birding. Through their guidance and enthusiasm, Chloe's curiosity was sparked, and she embarked on a remarkable adventure into the realm of birds.

Birding, as Chloe discovered, is no easy task, especially when it comes to observing rare and elusive bird species. To catch a glimpse of magnificent birds like warblers, Chloe had to wake up as early as 6:30 a.m., dedicating her mornings to patiently watching and studying these fascinating creatures. This commitment paid off when she had the opportunity to capture exquisite photographs of these rare birds, allowing her to preserve and share the beauty of their existence. The most fulfilling experience for her was that she captured the 100th species of bird on our campus. This is an indelible contribution to our school's bird-watching club.

Through her birding adventures, Chloe learned to attune her senses to the environment and listen and observe the world around her. The experience taught her to appreciate the wonders of nature and develop a deep sense of connection with the rich biodiversity that surrounds us. Birding became more than a hobby for Chloe; it became an essential part of her outdoor education, instilling a sense of wonder and fostering a lifelong bond with the natural world.

Chloe’s presentation served as a reminder of the transformative power of passion and the immense beauty that lie just beyond our doorstep.
