Middle and Primary School Math Department: G6 Math Art Project “Tessellations and Optical Illusions”

May 18, 2023

In the past month, SHSID sixth-grade students participated in a unique interdisciplinary project called " Tessellations and Optical Illusions". Unlike traditional math calculations, this project combined art and mathematics to create a rich and exciting learning experience. The project was divided into two main themes: creating chessboard patterns and exploring visual illusions.

With the guidance of their teacher and video resources, the students learned how to create simple chessboard pattern mosaics through hands-on activities. Additionally, the teachers provided a wealth of visual illusions for students to discuss and explore, helping them understand the reasons behind optical illusions.

After the lessons, the students completed individual projects based on their own interests. Inspired by great works of art, they used their imagination to create beautiful pieces.

This interdisciplinary project not only broadened the students' mathematical knowledge but also enhanced their appreciation of aesthetics, encouraging them to explore the vast world of mathematics. Throughout the project, G6 students demonstrated their creativity and artistic talents and gained a strong sense of accomplishment.
