G7 YD: Sugar — The Bitter Truth
On May 11th, 2023, the G7 Youth Development class topic was focused on the dangers of sugar. The goal of the lesson was for students to identify hidden sugars in products and identify the general dangers of consuming sugar.
Firstly, harms of excess sugar to our body may vary. Excessive sugar intake can cause weight gain. Worldwide prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, however most cases of obesity can actually be prevented. It has also been proven that sugar can also cause type 2 diabetes, which can be prevented and managed with exercise and a healthy diet.
Secondly, teachers explained the various products that have hidden sugars in them. This includes products such as ketchup and yogurt. It was certainly shocking for some students, but beneficial since now they are aware of consuming these foods in moderation.
Lastly, students explored Dr. Lustig, who is famous for his criticism of the Food and Drug Administration’s interpretations of sugar, and dedication of his career to helping obese children. His video about sugar showed extremely obese patients recovering through exercising and healthy diets.
Students now understand the unthinkable harms that consuming excess sugar can result in. Although excessive sugar is harmful, as long as people maintain good lifestyle habits and make sure to only eat a moderate amount, they can grow up and keep healthy.
