Music Department: First SHSID Choir “Chords of Soul Lunchtime Concert” Performed Successfully

On the afternoon of April 28, the SHSID Middle School Choir and the SHS and SHSID High School Mixed Choir came together at the Zhongxing Building B1 lobby to present the “Chords of Soul Lunchtime Concert” performance.

The performance was delivered by G6-8 students from SHSID, as well as G9-12 students from both SHS and SHSID. The concert was started by the SHSID Middle School Choir, along with the SHSID Wind Ensemble’s lead flutist Edward Seo, delivering the Russian folk song “The Birch Tree”. Three more choruses, each of a distinct style, followed: the American folk-styled two-part chorus “Calico Cat”, Rossini’s art song “Duetto Buffo Di Due Gatti” (children’s choir version), and the three-part chorus “Marvelous, Magical World”. During intermission, the hosts James and Demi hosted a trivia game, both to lecture the audience on knowledge about chorus as an art form and to bring some variation into the otherwise straightforward performance.

Unlike the SHSID Middle School Choir, the SHS & SHSID Mixed Choir chose songs with a diversity of textures. Their three songs, an a cappella rendition of “Lollipop” adapted from the film Pitch Perfect 2, a three-part chorus “Once upon a Time” from the musical All American, and American rock song “Blue Suede Shoes”, were performed by a mixed, men’s, and women’s chorus, respectively, demonstrating the range of possible pitches and timbres that a mixed voice choir could offer.

Finally, performers from both choirs united to deliver the final song, Mendelssohn’s classical art song “Auf Flügeln des Gesanges”, concluding the performance on an uplifting note. The myriad of styles and techniques not only enriched the members’ performing experience, but also led the audience to experiencing the beauty of music from a multitude of perspectives. The conclusion of the performance was not a simple goodbye, but rather the dawn of a new chapter. Thank you for your participation and see you next time!
