Beyond Tradition, Get Inspiration - High School PD Activities Held

April 25, 2023

The busy midterm exam just ended, and it was followed closely by PD Day on April 21st. Teachers in high school were divided into multiple directions and participated in various career-development activities:

Academic training team: Teachers from experimental disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and biology started a 3-day online training forum by the IBO. Teachers learned and discussed the concepts and development of the new syllabus that will be implemented in 2025, including the approaches of learning and teaching, assessment methods for scientific essence, and new concepts of collaborative internal assessment. They also discussed appropriate solutions to potential problems that may arise in the implementation of the new syllabus. The three-day schedule is compact and efficient. The leader released all learning materials in advance through the Padlet online collaborative interaction platform, conducted group discussions online through Zoom, and summarized the phased achievements of each topic through online collaboration. The general feedback from participating teachers is that the new syllabus highlights the understanding of the essence of science and the assessment of scientific abilities, which coincides with the concepts of interdisciplinary learning, project-based learning, and blended teaching advocated in SHSID high school teaching. Each subject group will continue to carry out intra-group training based on the results of this training, guiding the development of school curricula.

The Chenshan Botanical Garden Team: About 30 teachers departed early in the morning and headed straight to the Chenshan Botanical Garden. During the warm spring season, the biology teachers popularized plants amongst other teachers regarding each plant’s family, genus, and species. Then the teacher team from SHSID and the researchers from the Chenshan Botanical Garden had a discussion on how to further deepen cooperation.

The Cultural Heritage Experience Team: More than 60 Chinese and foreign teachers, led by the experts, have used their hands and brains to coil a simple thread into various cute little rabbits, fully experiencing the charm of traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage culture.

The Experience Shanghai Team: About 30 teachers visited some exhibition halls in Shanghai, including the site of the Fourth National Congress of the Communist Party of China and Jinchao 8 Lane in Hongkou District, to appreciate the development and changes in Shanghai's urban history. Afterwards, more than 10 teachers further experienced the ever-changing nature of this metropolis through cycling.

A meaningful day rushed by in a tense rhythm, and teachers who participated in various activities benefited greatly. The diverse activities that transcend traditional teaching categories have inspired teachers to make use of interdisciplinary approaches, with biology and statistics colliding in botanical gardens, history and chemistry blending in cycling, and Chinese and mathematics intertwined in threads. After the charging activities, the teachers will return to their work with greater enthusiasm.
