Social Sciences Department: Knowing More about the Legal Profession
On the morning of April 21, 2023, a team of high-school students from SHSID visited Zhihe Partners for a half-day experience activity of the legal profession.

At the beginning of the event, the firm’s managing partner, Mr. Lu showed the students around the firm. They visited various areas of the firm under the guidance of the lawyers, including busy office areas, quiet meeting rooms, and fitness areas with unique scenery, etc.

Mr. Lu then gave a speech with the topic of "Law, Judicial Study, and the Community of Legal Professionals" to the students, and introduced the basic structure of the legal discipline and the daily work of lawyers. Mr. Lu's sharing was so candid that he pointed out both the upside and downside of taking law as a profession and shared that at earlier stage, it is very difficult for young lawyers to balance work and life. But to many, the growth and expertise accumulated during early stage of one's practice might be well worth it. He also encouraged students not to blindly follow the trend, but to make the decision whether to join the legal professional community or not, all based on their true understanding of themselves and their interests. He stressed that SHSID students are very motivated and strong in various languages so that international commercial arbitration might be a good direction to follow.

After Mr. Lu's speech, Mr. Lu's colleague, Ms. Gong, conducted a lively case analysis and discussion with the students on a civil tort case and a simulated crime scenario, combining common sense of life with basic legal theory. The discussion was heated between the students and the lawyers. SHSID students raised many questions and conducted logical legal analysis with the guidance of Ms. Gong. In the final question-and-answer session, the students enthusiastically asked questions, such as the qualification requirements for being a PRC lawyers, lawyer's professional ethics, and so on. After Mr. Lu answered every question of the students patiently and wittily, he reminded the students to be familiar with both the east and west way of thinking and the event concluded with a gift exchanging activity.

As part of the high-school career-experience activities of SHSID, this activity allows students interested in law to obtain first-hand information and experience in the front line of lawyers’ practice. Like what’s been stressed in the partner’s speech, it is hoped that everyone can strive to truly know him or herself, and find the passion and love to fuel one’s hard work.
