Puxi G2: Social Study — Mini-Market
In April, after learning about the concept of producer/consumer and the buyer/seller relationship in economics, the second graders were able to experience the real-life application of these concepts through a "mini market" activity!
Students formed groups and created their own mini companies with the task of producing a good that they could sell to other students and teachers. Once they had finalized their product idea, they would need to study the economics of producers, consumers and the relationship between them, and then brainstorm how to use the advertising campaign that will determine the success or failure of their respective companies at the "mini-market".

Students formed in groups created visually appealing and eye-catching promotional posters to draw customers in and they used their clever pricing and sales offerings to try and make deals. While out making purchases of their own, some savvy “entrepreneurs” were seen handing out promotional fliers to passersby or salespeople at other stalls.

With offerings from over 80 different “producers”, it was a consumer’s dream. Students and teachers could find delicious baked goods like cookies, bread and even pizza or other sweet and savory treats in the form of hard candies and baozi! If they needed some hydration after their treats, there were a variety of drinks on offer to quench one’s thirst. Crafts and handiwork also abounded as origami, bookmarks, jewelry and even stories were on offer if you looked in the right places. Additionally, if a customer enjoyed taking a chance, they were also given multiple different “surprise box” or “lucky draws” to try out.

After all students had their chance to both buy and sell, it was clear that they had all been able to bag a deal to make them smile. Even groups who may not have sold out of product were able to use the knowledge they had acquired around the topic of bartering to offload excess stock and help them to balance the books on their happiness! A successful mini-market and a great demonstration of Grade 2’s abilities not just to understand ideas but to apply them to the world they live in.
