Middle School Physics Department: Explore the World like a Physicist

Physics is a natural discipline that examines matter, energy and the natural forces around us. When it comes to physics, students may automatically think of adjectives such as "profound" or "difficult". In order to help students open the door and feel the beauty of physics, the Physics department of SHSID middle school section offers the elective course "Discover Physics". As a supplementary class to the existing lecture-based physics course, Discover Physics provides students with many chances of identifying patterns and summarizing laws through hands-on experiments, careful observations and powerful mathematical tools.

Every Monday, students from Grade 7 gather in the physics lab to explore the physical world like real physicists. In a course themed on the relationship between ice melting and temperature, the students observed the temperature change over time when heating a glass of ice. The teacher led them to explore the mysteries of heat science, and they could not help but wonder at the depth of physics knowledge behind the phenomena they took for granted in their daily lives.

As well, the teacher guided the students in designing a series of experiments. They designed a them to discuss the factors affecting the friction, summarized the relationship between voltage, current and resistance in an electrical circuit, etc. At the end of this Experiential Learning Project, most students will have begun their journey towards the world of Physics with passion and inquiring ability.
