G8: English Speech Competition Final
As the warm breeze adds an unusual bit of brightness to our campus, the eighth-grade students had an exciting English speech competition final in the auditorium on Thursday, April 13th. The best speakers from each English class were selected after a second round of selection.
Clouds covered half of the bright blue sky. A ray of sunlight paved a golden mattress onto the ground. As the bell rang, all classes gathered and headed off towards the auditorium, where they witnessed an epic show of talks presented by their peers.
Firstly, the S/S+ level representatives went on stage. Alice 8(3), Samuel 8(9), and Alexis 8(12) chose similar topics. They talked about various events of the Holocaust and created a strong emotional appeal during their excellent speeches. Henry 8(3) chose a different topic and he talked about the problem of climate change that the world is facing and the effects caused by this problem.
Next, students from H/H+ level began their talks. Angela 8(6), Alison 8(9), and Sophie 8(9) talked about hunger and malnutrition. Alison introduced the big issue facing the Philippines — a huge percentage of the population of children under five years old suffer from undernourishment, and the country's economic and societal development is greatly impacted by childhood undernutrition. Sophie's topic was mainly regarding the situation of malnutrition, undernourishment, and food insecurity in developing countries, focusing on Burundi (in Africa) and the society we live in today through the lens of a lollipop. Angela presented her topic on the global issue of food insecurity and its linkage with racial injustice. This problem deserves attention as the right to access sufficient nutritional food is not granted to citizens of different races and across different regions of the globe. The topic of Spring from class 8(5) was gender inequality, focusing on how people should not have gender stereotypes and should treat every single person in society equally, giving people equal rights and opportunities.
During the final, everyone explained different topics using unique styles and each of them has done an excellent job. It showed the continuous attention of SHSIDers to social phenomena and critical thinking of past issues and current global issues. The audience also felt a strong sense of agreement towards the content shared by the students up on stage.
The teachers, after a quick discussion, finally gave the list of the top 3 winners of this competition. Let us congratulate the winners!
