Middle School Biology Department: A New Way to Unlock Spring

April 17, 2023

On one beautiful spring day when nature was coming back to life, the students learning about botany welcomed the change with a vigorous potato planting project. In the beginning of March, students planted sprouted potatoes at a small farm. After a week, these potatoes had grown lush foliage. Students went to water the potato plants every week. After four weeks, the stems and leaves of the plants had fully developed.

On April 14, the students successfully dug up the first batch of potatoes and took them home. They cooked delicious dishes such as fried potatoes and beef brisket with tomato and potatoes.

Through this half semester of horticulture, the students themselves transformed into “little farmers”, divided up labor and cooperated with each other, and experienced the magical of nature in practice. Students improved in many important comprehensive skills such as scientific and creative thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. In the second half of the semester, they will face the challenge of planting blueberries and tomatoes. We look forward to the future bountiful harvests.
